Dasung Paperlike 103 Review: The 60Hz E Ink Monitor That Redefines Productivity

Dasung has recently unveiled the Paperlike 103, a portable 10.3-inch E Ink monitor that stands out as the company’s first to feature a 60Hz refresh rate. This advancement addresses the traditional limitations of E Ink displays, offering smoother scrolling and improved video playback capabilities.  

Key Features:

Display: The monitor boasts a 10.3-inch E Ink panel with a resolution of 1,872 x 1,404 pixels, resulting in a pixel density of 227 ppi. While this is slightly lower than the 300 ppi found in some high-end e-readers, it remains sufficient for clear text and images. Additionally, the display includes edge lighting with adjustable color temperature to enhance eye comfort during extended use. 

Design: Crafted from aluminum alloy, the Paperlike 103 is both lightweight and durable, measuring just 5 millimeters in thickness. This slim profile ensures portability, making it convenient for users on the go. 

Connectivity: The device utilizes a USB-C port for both power and data transmission, eliminating the need for an internal battery and keeping the monitor lightweight. It is compatible with various devices, including laptops and mobile devices, facilitating versatile usage scenarios. 

User Controls: Equipped with six physical buttons located on the left bezel, users can easily adjust power settings, brightness levels, color temperature, and switch between different display modes optimized for text, video, or images. 

Performance:

The introduction of a 60Hz refresh rate marks a significant improvement over traditional E Ink monitors, which typically operate at lower refresh rates. This enhancement allows for smoother transitions, making activities such as scrolling through documents and browsing websites more fluid. While E Ink technology is not inherently designed for high-speed video playback, the increased refresh rate brings it closer to the performance of LCD and OLED screens in this regard.

Pricing and Availability:

Currently available through the Chinese retailer Jing Dong, the Paperlike 103 is priced at 1,999 yuan (approximately $274). While it has not yet been released globally, Dasung typically expands the availability of its products beyond China, suggesting potential future accessibility in other markets.
